Riva FLV Encoder V2.0

Riva FLV Encoder converts your video files to the Flash Video format (FLV) using one of the existing presets or your own custom settings. It supports AVI, MPEG, QuickTime and WMV. It also comes bundled with the Riva FLV player for viewing FLV video directly.

The FLV video format is small and suitable for display in web pages using one of the existing free Flash Video players. Since Flash is cross-platform and is installed on most web browsers, there will be less system and codec incompatibility issues when viewing video in the FLV format.

Stoik Video Converter V1.1

Stoik Video Converter converts from WMV to AVI, or vice versa. The user interface is a little different, so make sure you read the help file!

Note: Stoik Video Converter V2.x is no longer portable. As such, I will be sticking with V1.1 until a portable new version comes along.

TMPGEnc V2.524

TMPGEnc converts AVI files to MPEG1, the format which is used in VCDs. It is probably one of the highest quality MPEG1 encoders around, and allows you to fine tune many encoding parameters, including bitrate, quantization matrix, GOP structure etc.

Note: TMPGEnc can also encode to MPEG2, but that is payware with a 30 day trial. It also displays in the splash screen on startup how many days you have left to test the MPEG2 functionality, but if you are not interested, you can always tick the checkbox "Don't show this screen on startup". MPEG1 encoding/decoding remains free after the trial period.

Due to licensing and patent issues, I don't think any freeware can legally offer MPEG encoding features without charge, unless the freeware author is a millionaire and pay for all the royalty charges himself!

The converted video clips are directly playable on PMP devices (eg. Archos). On Pocket PCs, Palms or smart phones, they are playable using The Core Pocket Media Player.

Any Video Converter V1.02

Any Video Converter is a video conversion tool designed to convert your files to formats playable on an iPod, PSP, or DVD. Though it is basically a front-end for MEncoder, it is far less robust than other front-ends. However, it is very useful if you're intending to make DVD's, iPod or PSP videos.

Note: The latest version of Any Video Converter writes settings to the registry. You can download that from the home page if you don't care about portable settings, or you can download V1.02 by clicking on the "Download" link for this entry. Thanks to Rykenden for sharing his copy.
